Termites eat wood, fact. They will also eat products that contain cellulose and various other things as well, and it is often these products that first attract the termites that then move onto the wood. There is one rule to remember when storing items; so not store anything in cardboard boxes under your house. You may as well send out termite invites as you are things so easy for them.
Subterranean termites enter through the soil, and high soil levels near the walls of the house is asking for trouble. There are some who have soil levels so high that their termite barriers are completely ineffective. The higher the soil or concrete the more chance you have of being invaded, lower those levels pronto, or move the soil altogether.
For unknown reasons, there were voids left when many houses were built. The problem with these voids is that there is no access to them, so they can’t be checked out during the termite inspection and are also perfect for termites to cause untold damage undetected. These voids will no doubt also contain building waste, or a banquet for termites. Access must be made into these voids to prevent serious damage.
If the ventilation under your house is poor, the moisture will quickly build up and will have little chance of drying out. The old terracotta vents that were all the rage in older properties simply don’t allow enough air to be circulated to provide adequate ventilation. Larger vents or even special fans will keep your space dry and will quickly eradicate any dampness that does get in.
If you have regular termite inspections, there will be areas that have been classed as high risk. These areas will need checking more regularly than once a year so do all that you can to lower the risk in these areas. Your control company should also tell you which tell-tale signs to look for, so any infestation can be nipped in the bud.
There are many reasons why excess moisture can build up where it isn’t supposed to, and this moisture will dampen the wood and make a perfect environment for damp wood termites. Reduce these sources of moisture by adjusting overflows and making sure gutters are in good order. The more moisture, the higher the humidity, the worse the infestation.
Finally, never underestimate the power of eyesight. Inspect all areas at every opportunity, if you have had a bad infestation that took a lot of getting rid of, are you sure you have taken all the steps required to stop a repeat performance?

Sliding doors are doors which run along a track as they are opened or closed. This track is what keeps the doors in place as they are slid. The doors are able to slide over the track through the rollers which are attached at the top and the base of the door. Over time, these rollers may become worn out, dirty or broken. This can make it difficult to open and close the doors. If this happens, there are a couple of things that you can try to repair.
First, you need to check the manual of the sliding doors you have. This is important so you would know how your doors should be removed from the tracks properly before repairing the rollers. Generally, however, you can remove the doors by lifting them up, if they are supported at the bottom, so that the bottom part would be slightly above the track at the bottom. You can then pull them forward so that you can simply take the doors out. If your sliding doors are supported at the top, lift them after aligning the notches that are on the doors and the track. Angle the doors out so you can clear the rollers and remove the door.
Once you have your doors out, you can then do an inspection of the rollers. If there are any debris or dirt, clean or brush them off using a rag or an old toothbrush. You can then spray some lubricant on the rollers and check if they are able to move loosely and freely.
You should also check the track for any debris and dirt as well as any bends which may be preventing the rollers from moving freely. If you find a bend, you can just bend it back in place carefully through moving the metal slowly.
You can then place the doors back in place and check if the rollers are able to move properly. If you are still having a hard time moving them along the track, you can contact the manufacturer of the sliding doors or a contractor to check what else needs to be repaired. Doing this would also be advisable if you are unsure what to do at any point, to prevent causing any more damage or problems to your doors.

Tropical storms and hurricanes are well known in the south. Some area of the southern United States is hit by one of these huge and dangerous storms every year. Once in a while the north gets hit by one. The northern states are more likely to get hit by a nor’easter in the winter months. This is a huge storm that carries high winds and cold temperatures. There will be freezing rain and plenty of snow. Many people will lose their electric during a nor’easter. Most windows will allow bad drafts into the house and make it very hard to stay warm. This is especially true if you rely on electricity to heat your home. If you purchase storm windows you can cut down on the drafts. Some windows are insulated and will prevent all drafts from coming in.
All you can do if you lose the power during one of these bad winter storms is to bundle up and rely on your storm windows to keep the cold out. You will realize just how great these windows really are if you have to experience this.
They are also great for keeping the heat inside so the temperatures will not drop as rapidly in the house. No one asks for a nor’easter but unfortunately they happen all the time. This is especially true for the north east part of the country. Nor’easters usually start out at sea and build much like a hurricane does. When it hits the land it will bring huge amounts of snow and ice. Some say it is the clashing of two weather fronts that cause it. Perhaps they are right.
Get yourself ready for harsh winter weather by putting winter windows in. You can have someone come to your home to measure for you so you are assured of getting the right sizes. Many times the people you buy them from will also install them for a nominal fee. It is probably best to have the experts install them. Then you will know they are in correctly and won’t have to worry about leaks or any other problem. Many storm windows come with a guarantee.
